2月21日、皇太子・浩宮が自身の誕生日に際しての記者会見で、「最近非常に感銘を受けた」として一篇の詩を読み上げた。本書に収録されているドロシー・ロー・ノルト Dorothy Law Nolte の詩『子ども』だそうだ。

本書は1991年に出版されたスウェーデンの教科書の邦訳で、1997年に出版された。
皇太子の発言の報道以後、書店では売切れ、出版元は急遽増刷を決定、現在のところ店頭に並ぶのは3月中頃の予定だそうだ。こんな地味な出版社に突然降って湧いた注文、めでたい。

ところで、このドロシー・ロー・ノルト Dorothy Law Nolte の詩は、日本では「アメリカインディアンの教え」として既に有名なものであった。

このドロシー・ロー・ノルトの詩は20行余りの"Children Learn What They Live"という詩である。
アメリカ先住民族の「教え」というわけではない。

これが「アメリカインディアンの教え」となってしまったのは、ラジオ番組（今話題のニッポン放送で）でこの詩が紹介されて反響があったものを、 当時その番組内で人生相談コーナーを担当していた早稲田大学教授・加藤諦三が、 その詩を箇条書きのレジュメのようにあつかい、何を間違ったのか「アメリカインディアンの教え」として扶桑社（これまた今話題のフジテレビ系列の）1994年出版されベストセラーになってしまったのだ。その本は、いまでは文庫化されて、いまだに販売されているようだ。

その本、ドロシー・ロー・ノルトが見つからなかったのをいいことに、中身は彼女の詩とも、アメリカインディアンとも関係のない「加藤諦三の教え」なのだ。その上、性懲りもなく続編まで登場、「続アメリカインディアンの教え」、「続々アメリカ・インディアンの教え」、中身はなんだか知らないが、とにかく厚顔無恥という感じである。
1998年、その Dorothy Law Nolte 自身が、この詩についての本 Children Learn What They Live: Parenting to Inspire Values を出版した。 邦訳され「子どもが育つ魔法の言葉」としてPHP出版社から発売された。その後、加藤諦三教授は2002年 「ドロシーおばさんの大事なことに気づく」と。インディアンは手放したが、ドロシー・ロー・ノルトに、まーだ、のっかった本を出版されているのだ。こういうのを「人のフンドシで.......」というものではないのかなぁ。
しかし、この先生の膨大な著作リストを見るだけで圧倒される。私は絶対に読みそうもない本ばかりがならんでいるなぁ。

急にこの詩が脚光を浴びたわけだが、あまりにも簡明な詩なので、かえって身勝手な解釈が横行しているように思える。「Parenting to Inspire Values」が、どうして「子は親の鏡」になるのか分からない。
しかし、皇太子から「アメリカインディアンの教え」の.....なんて話じゃなくてよかった。まぁ、ちゃんと調べてあるんだろうけど。
